Lead Aprons & Lead-Free Aprons
Lead aprons, lead gowns, lead-free aprons and vest & skirt sets from ACOVIC, supplied in Singapore and Malaysia by ForthMed.
Lead & lead-free aprons/gowns for imaging, cath lab & surgical teams
A well-fitted radiation protection apron is the most important piece of personal protective equipment for anyone working near fluoroscopy, C-arm, cath lab or interventional imaging. ForthMed supplies the ACOVIC range of lead aprons, lead gowns and lead-free aprons – also known as X-ray aprons or radiation protection aprons – to hospitals, clinics and dental practices across Singapore and Malaysia.
Choose the style that suits how your team works: front-protection aprons for everyday imaging, wrap-around smocks that cover the back when staff turn away from the source, two-piece vest & skirt sets that move weight off the shoulders, and shoulder-release or drop-off designs that come off easily under a sterile gown. Maternity, paediatric and dental aprons are also available.
Lead-free aprons and lead-free gowns use lead-equivalent composite materials instead of lead sheeting and are typically lighter, which helps reduce shoulder and back strain over long procedure lists. Both lead and lead-free versions are rated by lead equivalence (mmPb), and our team can help you match the protection level to your procedures.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a lead apron and a lead-free apron?
A lead apron uses lead-based shielding sheets, while a lead-free apron uses lead-equivalent composite materials such as other heavy metals. Lead-free aprons are usually lighter. Both are specified by their lead equivalence (mmPb), so compare aprons at the same mmPb rating and check the protection at the X-ray energies you use.
Which lead equivalence (mmPb) do I need?
Common choices are 0.25 mmPb for lower-scatter work and 0.35 or 0.5 mmPb at the front for fluoroscopy and interventional procedures. The right level depends on your workload and local requirements, so confirm it with your radiation safety officer or medical physicist. Ask us for the options available for each style.
Is a vest & skirt set better than a one-piece apron?
A two-piece vest & skirt set carries much of the weight on the hips instead of the shoulders, which many staff find more comfortable for long procedures. A one-piece apron is quicker to put on and take off for short or occasional use.
How should lead aprons be stored and checked?
Hang aprons on proper apron hangers or racks and never fold or crease them, as this can crack the shielding. Clean them according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and have them inspected visually and by X-ray or fluoroscopic screening at regular intervals set by your facility’s radiation protection programme. Many facilities do this at least once a year.
Are lead aprons the same as X-ray aprons?
Yes. Lead aprons, lead gowns, X-ray aprons and radiation protection aprons are different names for the protective garment worn during X-ray, fluoroscopy and interventional procedures. ForthMed supplies ACOVIC X-ray aprons in both lead and lead-free versions in Singapore and Malaysia.
