Thyroid shields for staff and patients
The thyroid is one of the more radiation-sensitive organs and sits close to the scatter field during fluoroscopy, cath lab and interventional work. A thyroid shield, also called a thyroid collar or lead collar, wraps the neck to protect it, and works with any apron or vest.
The ACOVIC range includes adjustable thyroid shields with hook-and-loop or buckle closure in 0.25 and 0.5 mmPb, a mammography collar designed for patients that does not interfere with breast imaging, and washable reusable covers that keep collars hygienic between users.

Do I need a separate thyroid shield if my apron already has a collar?
Not always. Many ACOVIC aprons include an integrated thyroid collar. A separate thyroid shield is useful when an apron has no collar, when staff share aprons, or when patients need neck protection.
Which lead equivalence should a thyroid shield have?
The adjustable thyroid shields in this range are available in 0.25 mmPb and 0.5 mmPb. Your radiation safety officer or medical physicist can advise which suits your procedures.
Can thyroid shields be used for patients?
Yes. Thyroid Shields B and C are designed for both staff and patient use, and Mammography Collar D is a short patient collar designed for mammography.
